Speaking to me from her Manhattan apartment – unhaunted, she assures me – Nekrasova herself doesn’t seem to think there’s a debate to be had.

Should we mock these gullible youngsters, with their YouTube and methamphetamine addictions, and their passionate belief that Epstein was murdered to conceal the rot pervading the ruling classes of the West? Or are they onto something? Moreover, the two begin to believe that the powerful elites who murdered Epstein are coming for them too. One of the flatmates, Noelle (played by Nekrasova’s writing partner Madeline Quinn), and a nameless stranger (Nekrasova) who barges into the apartment – and Noelle’s bed – claiming to be an investigator in the Epstein case, jointly become convinced that the home played host to all manner of unspeakable sexual crimes. Nekrasova’s film is a merciless but nuanced satire, at one moment skewering millennial internet culture – two of the characters become obsessed with conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death in custody in 2019 – and at the next evoking a terrible unease about just how far his child-trafficking ring reached into the circles of the rich and powerful. The Hollywood Reporter declared it “merely an excuse for taboo fetish play”, while Variety praised it as a “brash, gutsy morbidly funny first feature.” It’s out in America next month, and already dividing critics.

The Scary of Sixty-First is a low-budget, B-movie-style story of three young women in New York who begin to suspect that their suspiciously cheap Upper East Side apartment may have belonged to the late billionaire financier and infamous sex offender. Best known for co-hosting the deliciously outrageous Red Scare podcast, she’s about to burst into the broader public consciousness thanks to a small but very funny role in the latest season of Succession – and her directorial debut, a horror film about Jeffrey Epstein. Despite the languid Los Angeles drawl that makes the 30-year-old actress and director sound perpetually bored, she’s one of the most energetic and outspoken voices in contemporary political satire. Dasha Nekrasova doesn’t run from a scandal.
